What is the drink driving limit and what are the punishments?

Drink driving limits, including blood readings, breathe readings and urine readings per 100 millilitres, and what are the potential punishments for the driver of the vehicle.

What is the drink driving limit?

In technical terms, you are over the drink drive limit if there is

  • 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood in your body or,
  • 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres in your breath or,
  • 107 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres in your urine.

What are the punishments for driving with excess alcohol?

As a general guide, the driver could be facing anything from a maximum penalty of six months in prison, to a fine of up to £5,000 and a minimum driving ban of 12 months.
